Pier Voulkos, Potato Chip Bead Neckpieces, 1998, detail

At the PAA , we occasionally hear from readers with requests for specific images from our archival stash of “eye candy.” Recently one of those inquiries revealed a gap in our historical smorgasbord of offerings.

Here then, is a piece by Pier Voulkos that to our knowledge has not been available on the internet previously. To ensure that another tasty nugget gets added to Pier’s recognized influence on and contribution to the medium, we present Pier’s “Potato Chip Bead Neckpieces”, two of a series from 1998.  The origins of the chatoyant patterning appeared as early as 1995 among an assortment of sampler beads. Unlike the original chubby bead pictured there, these large flat beads are a mere 1/8″ thick.  To achieve the super-thin bead profile, Pier built the form over slender pre-cured tubes, essentially creating the “hole” first and constructing the bead over it.

Savor the treat. And be sure to let us know if you have any other unfulfilled cravings.

I cannot remember a time in my life that I wasn't interested in looking at art, talking about art and the making of art. In 1990 I earned a Phd in art history at the University of Maryland. My first experiences with polymer clay were in 1992, but I consider my real work with the medium to date from 1999.
