Polymer in the Press
The current issue of Ornament Magazine carries an article entitled Celebrating Polymer. For history buffs, this article includes
an excellent bibliography as well as a timeline which extends as far back as 1987. The Maggio/Blackford pendant pictured above is just one of many marvelous images shown on the timeline. The editor writes:
“Ornament is in the midst of publishing a series of articles on Polymer, highlighting those who have been influential in bringing this multifaceted material to the forefront of craft. These articles will lead to an unprecedented exhibition at the Racine Art Museum (RAM) in October: Terra Nova: Polymer Art at the Crossroads. Putting this collection together has been years in the making and incredible efforts have been expended to position polymer with other exceptional craft at the museum level.”
In conjunction with the exhibition, RAM is sponsoring a symposium on the opening weekend. Entitled, Polymer:The Journey to New Terrain, the symposium will take place Friday, October 21 through Sunday October 23, 2011. Detailed information about the symposium as well as registration forms will be posted shortly on RAM’s Terra Nova website page. I cannot remember a time in my life that I wasn't interested in looking at art, talking about art and the making of art. In 1990 I earned a Phd in art history at the University of Maryland. My first experiences with polymer clay were in 1992, but I consider my real work with the medium to date from 1999.
